Physicals, vaccines required for back-to-school

Classrooms throughout Sumner County may be empty and quiet as we enter the midpoint of the summer break, but the staff at the Sumner County Health Department is preparing for the return of students only a few short weeks from now.

The summer break is a great time to schedule your child’s back-to-school physical and update those immunizations. There are new vaccines, additional requirements and rules that you need to make sure you are aware of so that your child is up to date.

As the start of a new school year approaches, parents become overwhelmed preparing for their child’s return to the classroom.

Two things that can be taken care of this summer are the child’s back to school physical and required immunizations. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends an annual check-up for children from age 2-18. These routine physicals allow pediatricians to assess your child’s growth and development, as well as check his or her weight, blood pressure, cholesterol, vision, hearing and other physical, emotional or social health concerns.
