To save $15.8 million, the General Assembly is looking at eliminating the North Carolina Immunization Program and shift the cost of children’s vaccines to private insurers, raising concerns among health care advocates that children’s health will be imperiled.
The program provides immunizations required for attending North Carolina public schools free to children who are covered by health insurance. About one-third of all North Carolina children annually receive their vaccinations through the program, says State Health Director Jeffrey Engel.
